Representatives of the Evangelical Church in Romania estimate that nearly 1,000,000 tourists will visit 53 of the most important fortified churches in Transylvania annually, including the one in Câlnic. Entry will once again be possible based on a card that provides access to all of these locations.
In the revision phase
Since 2017, tourists have had access to the “Transylvania Card” with which they could visit 53 Saxon fortified churches. The price was 50 lei and the concept was part of a project called “Discover the Soul of Transylvania”. The card was withdrawn during the pandemic. Currently, the “Transylvania Card” project and its related website are in the revision phase. If you want more information about fortified churches, we invite you to visit the website of the Fortified Churches Foundation.

Since 2013
“Discover the Soul of Transylvania” has been organizing cultural tourism in fortified churches since 2013, mainly with the help of the “Transylvania Card” holiday passport. Of the 160 medieval and fortified churches in the legacy of the Evangelical Church A.C. in Romania (and beyond), only some of them are open to tourists. The most important 53, however, are included in the “Transylvania Card” circuit. All UNESCO churches (Câlnic, Valea Viilor, Biertan, Viscri, Saschiz, Prejmer, Dârjiu), the medieval churches from the seven Saxon towns (Sibiu, Mediaș, Bistrița, Brașov, Orăștie, Sebeș, Sighișoara), as well as others of tourist importance, such as Cisnădioara, Cârța, Hărman, Cincșor, or Mălâncrav, are included.
Online
The “Transylvania Card” can be purchased from bookstores, Saxon churches in Sibiu, Mediaș, Sighișoara, Râșnov, Biertan, Miercurea Ciuc, Brașov, Timișoara, and Cluj-Napoca, as well as online, through the www.transilvania-card.ro website. This card comes with a map of the fortified churches. The map is available in German/Romanian and English/Romanian versions. There is also a cultural calendar which lists events that are open to the general public in the fortified church areas.
